Sunderland`s new recruit El Hadji Diouf is hoping Sunderland can push for a European spot this season.

The skilful forward is raring to get his Sunderland career under Keane off to a good start is hoping his new club can compete for the places near the top of the league.

Diouf told the Sunderland Echo "When I went to Bolton people asked me why, but we finished sixth and qualified for Europe. I want to do the same with Sunderland, why not aim for the UEFA Cup?"

"I am very happy to be at Sunderland and it is a club which should demand respect. It is moving forward to bigger things for me."

"I can`t wait for my Sunderland career to get going. All I will promise is to give my best for the team."

"I am happy to play for a man like him, I like this type of man, he is a big character and I know he wants to do something big at Sunderland. I remember playing against Roy Keane in the League Cup final at Cardiff."

"We had a bit of banter in the game but I like that. He is a strong character and so am I."
