Black Cats win race for Da Silva
Sunderland look set to make their first move of the summer with the capture of Paulo Da Silva on a free transfer from 9 times Mexican Premier League winners Deportivo Toluca.
The club had hoped to keep the 29 year old centre-back, but Steve Bruce stepped in with an offer the Mexican side could not compete with.
'The English team's offer was not within our reach,' read a Toluca club statement.
Da Silva is believed to be travelling to England this week to tie up the deal, whilst he made an effort to thank his former club for their help in giving him this opportunity.
'First of all I want to thank the Deportivo Toluca for the effort they made and for giving me the opportunity to fulfil a dream, which is playing in Europe, it is certainly an important step in my football career,' Da Silva told Toluca`s official website.
It is uncertain as to whether Bruce sees Da Silva as the centre-half who will partner Anton Ferdinand at the heart of the clubs defence. However, following the departure of loanees Callum Davenport and Tal Ben-Haim, the position is certainly an area that needed strengthening.
