Sunderland continued their summer cost-cutting exercise by releasing eight academy players.

Ben Christensen, Ian Graham, Jay Martin, Michael Allan, Luke Ball, Kevin Davison, Craig McFarlane and Jake Richardson have all been told to leave the club as their contracts will not be renewed.

Striker Billy Dennehy will also not be given a new deal, having signed a youth team contract in January 2005.

None of the players released featured for the first team this season and it was felt their progress was significant enough to warrant new deals.

Sunderland are set to announce the retained list for the first team tomorrow, when the highest profile casualty is expected to be captain Gary Breen.

Looks like a lot of cost cutting from top to bottom. New broom sweeping clean.
