An amazing statistic came from Bootham Crescent last night, with the attendance at a recorded 5148 people, exactly half of that figure was away support from Sunderland. A great testament to loyal fans who have clearly missed watching the lads in the dull summer months!

Steve Bruce called upon regular players and included only one new signing in the shape of Craig Gardner.

Gardner played 80 minutes and nearly got his debut goal in the new blue and white away strip with a close free kick and numerous long range attempts.

Sunderland scored two goals in the first half through Phil Bardsley and Oumare Tounkara scoring very similar goals.

The good news for Steve Bruce is all players used came away unscathed and will link up with all his new signings for the German games over the next week.
