Niall Quinn has revealed that Peter Reid's former No.2 will be the new assistant boss as Sunderland, returning 4 years after leaving the club.
Saxton was Peter Reid's right-hand-man at Sunderland from 1995 to 2002, leaving in June of the season before Sunderland's 19 point relegation misery. Adrian Heath replaced him as assistant under Reid.
During his time at Sunderland, Saxton was involved in two promotions, one relegation and two consecutive 7th place Premiership finished. It is clear Quinn was impressed by Saxton during his time on Wearside as a player, during a time of success for Sunderland that has not been matched since,
'Bobby was instrumental in helping us reach the heights a few years ago,
any player from that time will tell you that.
'They will tell you how significant and important he was. I want him to do the exactly the same things now.'
Kevin Richardson, who has presided over the 3 friendly wins this pre-season, in which Sunderland have scored 7 goals and conceded 0, will be first team coach.
