Lenny signs on...
Winger Liam Lawrence has signed a contract extension at the Stadium of Light.
The Republic of Ireland international has been rewarded for his performances in the Premiership last season, form that he has carried into pre-season games this term. He has signed a new four-year deal that will take him to 2010.
New boss Niall Quinn has been quick to offload several players, with Julio Arca, Kelvin Davis and Christian Bassilla all leaving the club, but the big man clearly sees Lawrence as a pivotal part of his future plan for Sunderland.
Announcing the contract extension, Quinn said;
'Liam Lawrence has a vital role to play for us. He impressed in what was a very difficult season last year and in a more positive environment we hope to reach the levels his talents deserve.
'Liam is an international of the near future and there are exciting days ahead for the club, the player and fans alike.'
Sunderland paid Mansfield an initial £175,000 for Lawrence 2 years ago, with the figure rising to £325,000 after his appearances in the Championship winning season a year ago. An extra £50,000 will also be heading Mansfield once Lawrence makes an appearance for the Republic of Ireland.
