'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gyan return unlikely despite O'Neill comments

Despite the fact Martin O'Neill has said he would like to bring disgraced striker Asamoah Gyan back to the club, it looks unlikely to happen.

O'Neill told the Sunderland Echo that he would look into the possibility of bringing the Ghanaian back to Sunderland:

"It`s absolutely something that I`ll address," said O`Neill.

"I have to talk to Niall about exactly where we stand on that. His position will definitely be looked at.'

However, from the information that was made public at the time of the deal, it is clear that Al-Ain included a clause in the deal which meant that Gyan could not be re-called.

The UAE outfit also paid a hefty loan fee for the former Rennes and Udinese forward so were never likely to be prepared to give up Gyan's services without a fight.

Another factor must surely be the player. If Gyan was happy to leave the Premier League and Sunderland in the first place, it's hard to imagine him being happy to return to the Stadium of Light, taking a pay-cut in the process.

On top of all that, it seems highly unlikely that Black Cats' supporters would take to a man who left the club under a cloud to chase the riches of the UAE.

It looks a non-starter from where I'm standing.
