Meyler future set to be decided

Meyler future set to be decided

The future of Irish midfielder David Meyler is very much up in the air this summer after injury condemned him to just nine appearances this season.

The 22 year-old Irish midfielder recovered from a second cruciate ligament injury this season but has made just one start and eight substitute appearances for the Black Cats.

With the likes of Lee Cattermole, Jack Colback, David Vaughan and Craig Gardner all ahead of the former Cork City man, his chances continue to look limited.

Speaking to The Sunderland Echo, Meyler made clear his intention to remain and fight for a first-team spot:

"Obviously, I haven`t played as much as I would have wanted to.

"But I have never even considered leaving or going out on loan.'

Meyler continued:

"I want to play for Sunderland and I want to play for the manager.

"You have to keep believing. I`ve played 20-odd games for Sunderland and there`s no point in getting down.'

However, manager Martin O'Neill appears to take a slightly different view and insists that the midfielder needs game time, wherever that may be:

'It's been very, very tough for players, David Meyler in particular, whose last start for us - it might even have been his only start for us - was against Stoke City.' O'Neill told The Sunderland Echo.

'It's something we would look at in the summertime. He's a genuinely good lad. He hasn't moaned about it to me, but he did say he would like to play.

'His first choice would be playing for Sunderland, but at some stage or another he has to play,' said O'Neill.

Would you keep David Meyler? Would you send him out on-loan, or would you just sell him?
