OFFICIAL: McFadden pens short-term deal

Sunderland have this morning (Friday), signed James McFadden on a short-term deal.

The 29 year-old left Everton at the end of his contract and has been a free agent since, spending several weeks training with the Black Cats & turning out for the U21 side.

The length of the deal is undisclosed however.

McFadden, born in Glasgow, moved south of the border for the first time in 2003, leaving Motherwell to join the Toffees.

The winger-cum-forward spent five years at Goodison Park, making over 100 league appearances before being sold to Birmingham City in 2008.

A succession of knee injuries hampered McFadden's time with the Blues, but he still managed 82 appearances in three years before leaving the club on a bosman in 2011 following relegation.

After failing to find a club ahead of last season despite trials at Wolves and Celtic, McFadden re-signed for Everton in mid-October.

David Moyes only used the Scot sparingly, as McFadden made a further seven appearances for the Toffees over the course of the season.

McFadden has won 48 caps for Scotland, scoring 15 goals including a screamer against France in September 2007 to help Scotland come agonizingly close to Euro 2008 qualification.

He has been handed the squad number 11.

Welcome to Sunderland, James.
