Scharner opts to return to Wigan Athletic

Sunderland target Paul Scharner has returned to his first English club, Wigan Athletic, on-loan.

The 32 year-old defender-cum-centre-half has returned to the DW Stadium on-loan until the end of the season.

Scharner's agent, Valentine Hobel, had earlier in the week spoken about the possibility of the Hamburg defender joining Martin O'Neill's side on-loan for the rest of the campaign.

However, the former West Brom utility man has subsequently re-joined the Latics on-loan after spending a season at the club under current boss Roberto Martinez.
