Motherwell unsure on James McFadden deal

Motherwell assistant Kenny Black says that the club are unsure as to whether they can afford to offer James McFadden a deal.

McFadden, 29, was released by Sunderland following the expiry of his short-term contract with the Black Cats and has been training with the 'Well recently.

The former Everton and Birmingham City attacker had been expected to join Championship outfit Nottingham Forest whilst Alex McLeish was in charge of the Tricky Trees.

Martin O'Neill had earlier stated his intention to offer McFadden a new short-term contract until the end of the season with the plan of loaning the Scotland international out to get first-team football.

However, McFadden has since been training with his first club, Motherwell, with the aim of earning a deal with the SPL side.

Speaking to BBC Sport, 'Well assistant Black admitted that a contract offer might not be forthcoming.

'He is keeping himself ticking over, a local lad, and we're happy to have him on board,' said Black.

'I don't know the finances in regards to if we can offer him anything,' explained Black.

'Whether we can accommodate James McFadden will probably be for the chief executive to deal with.'
