'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Former Sunderland Striker Retires From Playing.

Ex Sunderland striker and Northern Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer David Healy has announced his retirement from football.

The 34 year old left Bury in the summer and has not been able to commit to another team due to being unable to maintain his fitness because of an ankle injury.

So he has decided to hang up his playing boots and take up a role in coaching and scouting, even though he has received offers from clubs at the other side of the world.

Healy said to reporters: 'It has been an absolute honour and privilege to wear the Northern Ireland shirt, to represent the people of our proud wee country and I hope to continue in whatever way I can, in my new career in coaching, to help Northern Ireland succeed.

'I had opportunities possibly abroad, Australia was mentioned. I had an opportunity last summer maybe to go to New Zealand.'

Healy began his career at Manchester United and played for a total of 11 clubs, he netted 36 goals for his country in 95 appearances.
