Poyet: 'You can't play that way against Tottenham'

Gus Poyet was in no doubt that it was defensive errors that condemned his side to defeat in the game against Tottenham on Saturday evening.

All was looking well for the home side when they took the lead in the first half when Hugo Lloris made a hash of Ondrej Celustka's ball into the box and Adam Johnson made them pay.

However, the visitors turned it round with goals either side of half time as Paulinho stabbed the ball home following a free-kick, and John O`Shea put the ball into his own net, making it five own goals since Poyet took over.

Poyet said to reporters: 'Very disappointed, for many reasons: one, because we don't have the heart to compete with Tottenham for long periods. To go ahead and score with a great goal, the type of goal we try to convince the players that they can do, but then something happened.

'Something can happen in the last minute, a simple foul, but the ball is played in and it drops and they are better than us, they are quicker than us. And once more an own goal, I don't know what to say about that. I have never seen it before. And then it was too open, you cannot play that way against Tottenham. You shouldn't be in that situation again.'

The result meant that the Black Cats remained bottom of the Premier League table, five points adrift of safety. Next week's game at West Ham United becomes a must win affair.

I can't see us going down. Not with the fixtures we have next year. All we need to do is stay in touch around Christmas. We can then put a decent set of results together, added with new January signings, and we will be fine.
