Our Attitude Must Be We'll Succeed

Manager Chris Coleman has been explaining how Sunderland find themselves in the middle of a tornado and the only way out of it is to fight to succeed rather than just survive.

Meeting with the media today to give his pre game press conference, Coleman is quoted by the Official Site as saying that any approach where you aim to just 'survive' is fatalistic and it means really you're expecting failure, the approach has to be 'succeed' and you push on from that point of view.

Travelling to Bristol City and Ashton Gate this weekend, the game is far from going to be easy with their form this season but Coleman knows something has to give for us following back to back defeats to Birmingham City and Ipswich Town.

'We`re right in the middle of a tornado. We have another game tomorrow and you can look at it two ways - I`m going to work to survive or I`m going to work to succeed.'

The second option there is what he's trying to drill into the players.

'If we go with the latter then we`ll be okay, but if we think, 'we`re away to Bristol City, they are up that end and we`re at this end, what if we go 1-0 down`, and its doom and gloom, if you`re of that mindset you`re attracting the worst and that`s what happens. You can never stop fighting and you have to keep going and keep believing, because, as negative as it feels, we`re two points away from getting out of this horrible situation we`re in.'

Coleman went on to explain.

'That doesn`t mean we`re safe until the end of the season, but it`s a positive step and we`ve got to hang on to that. I completely understand the frustrations of the supporters - who wouldn`t - all I`ll say is, from me to them, if we`ve ever needed them more than we do now, I`d hate to see the situation we were in before.'

He added.

'I know they`re angry and they have every right to be and they`re frustrated, but we`ve never needed them more than we do now. We won`t get away from where we are without their support.'
