Mick hoping for Cabanas high

Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy is keen to add the right sided midfielder to his squad and is confident of persuading him to join a team rooted to the bottom of the Premiership.

Cabanas arrived on Wearside last week for talks and McCarthy feels they went well. He told the South Shields Gazette: 'We have had a chat with him and his representatives. I like the look of him and we have talked about a possible move. He wants to move to the Premiership.'

McCarthy freely admits that he is finding it hard to add to his squad, with both financial restrictions and Sunderland's league position meaning the job of bringing in new faces is a tough one.

Sunderland's precarious position in the Premiership is an issue that cannot be avoided and McCarthy duly asked Cabanas about the possibility of relegation: 'I asked how he'd feel if we weren't in the Premiership.

'He said that, providing the team sticks together and it is a good set-up which it will be then he will be more than happy to try and fight his way back into the Premiership.

'That was good to hear. There's a lot to be discussed. It is still very early.'

Meanwhile it has also been reported that Sunderland have been rebuffed in their efforts to sign Republic of Ireland defender Ian Harte. The left back, who played under McCarthy at international level, currently plays for Spanish second division side Levante.

While Harte is said to be keen on a move back to England, Levante are unwilling to sell as they seek to gain promotion back to the top flight.
