Sunderland Progress Into Fourth Round

Many predicted trouble for Sunderland before the League Cup game with Peterborough, but in the end Kevin Ball had the team in a good frame of mind and they won comfortably.
Not the nicest night for football and that showed with the crowd being under 19,000, but they saw Sunderland run the show and two goals was enough to see the Black Cats progress into the fourth round.
Those goals came from Di Canio signings Emanuele Giaccherini and Valentin Roberge and although you could say that it was only league one opposition, Posh had proved before that they had the potential of causing an upset.
Sunderland looked up for it as soon as the game kicked off with Lee Cattermole and Giaccherini always looking dangerous. Sebastian Larsson gave the Posh keeper a warning as he fired a shot in from distance that went narrowly wide and then Jozy Altidore collected the ball from Giaccherini and smashed in a shot that Bobby Olejnik had to be on form to save.
But with the game approaching half time, Cattermole swung in an inviting ball for Giaccherini to run onto in the box and gave the keeper no chance, and the relief on the player's faces as they celebrated with the scorer painted their own picture.
In fact Sunderland could have gone into the break 2-0 up if Altidore had have had more luck with a shot that shook the upright.
In the second half the visitors seemed more up for it but as far as chances were going, it was the home side that were getting them, Giaccherini and Johnson both unlucky not to have added to the tally.
Westwood was called into action to stop a shot from Britt Assombalonga with just over 20 minutes left on the clock.
But on 73 minutes the game was put out of Peterborough's reach when Adam Johnson crossed for Roberge to head home.
