Another Own Goal Costs Sunderland

1 - 2

Stadium of Light

5:30 - 7 December 2013

Attendance: 37,963

After the second home defeat in a few days, admittedly against Chelsea and Tottenham, Sunderland now find themselves cut adrift by five points at the bottom of the table and things aren`t looking good.

One of the things that doesn`t look good is the column that you record the own goals in, since Gus Poyet has arrived at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats have conceded five goals from their own players.

The latest one came in this game with Spurs, it came from John O`Shea and it proved to be the match winner.

As for Tottenham, all the talk has been of whether their manager is heading for the sack or not, a slightly strange situation given that Tottenham are now four games unbeaten and won the last two 2-1.

Poyet needed his side to show the same determination as they did in the game that saw them beat Manchester City and things started pretty well after holding their own in the early stages they got the breakthrough on 37 minutes.

Ondrej Celustka sent in a corner and Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris made a hash of getting hold of it and Adam Johnson hit the back of the net showing the Spurs keeper that mistakes will be punished.

But the happiness around the Stadium of Light only lasted about six minutes before the visitors were level through the Brazilian Paulinho.

Then came the disaster involving O`Shea and Tottenham were heading back to White Hart Lane with all three points while Sunderland suffered even more because of results that did not go their way involving the sides above.

Victories earlier in the day for Crystal Palace, Norwich and Stoke turned on the pressure and leaves the Black Cats now needing two victories just to stay with the teams above.
