Sunderland played Bolton Wanderers in front of a large home support. Sunderland manager Roy Keane made several changes to the starting line up with Miller, Richardson and Cole coming in for Yorke, Wallace and Waghorn.
Sunderland started the game brightly with Richardson, Jones and Miller showing their class.
Sunderland`s first goal came for some great play between Jones and Richardson. Jones who was through on goal squared the ball to Richardson for him to blast past Jaaskelainen.
Sunderland then scored their second goal. Richardson`s corner was perfect for Jones to head home at the far post.
Everything was going so well for Sunderland until they conceded a soft goal. Bolton were awarded a freekick on the edge of the box. Diouf floated in a cross come shot that Gordon got nowhere near.
After the break the game went a scrappy with Sunderland having to defend well.
Sunderland could breath easily in stoppage time when Murphy sealed the victory after Jones put him through on goal. Murphy calmly slotted home a left foot drive past Jaaskelainen.
