Sunderland 2 - Wigan 0

The Stadium Of Light

9th February 2008 15:00

Sunderland 2 Wigan 0

Darryl Murphy`s thunderous drive sealed the points for Sunderland after Dickson Etuhu had put the Blackcats ahead. The match was billed as a relegation six pointer and thankfully Sunderland won.

Sunderland`s First real chance of the game was scored by Etuhu his powerful header beating Kirkland after Whitehead delivered the perfect cross from a freekick.

Sunderland should have had two minutes later when Prica missed what could be the miss of the season. Jones managed to nudge the ball forward and Prica somehow lost his footing and the vital moment.

Wigan then came out after the break with a bit more belief and maybe deserved an equalizer with their first effort cleared off the line Kilbane`s low drive came back out off the post.

Wigan managed to hit the woodwork again this time Heskey`s effort was a header against the bar after some good football from Koumas.

Sunderland then introduced new signing Andy Reid who managed to change the game instantly. Reid played the perfect pass to Murphy now out on the right wing.

Murphy did no more the cut in and unleash an unstoppable left foot drive in to the top corner of Kirkland`s net.

Sunderland with a bit of breathing space settled down and closed out the match and must be said had it not been for some great saves from Gordon Wigan could have got something out of the game.
