Owing to the departure of Asamoah Gyan and injury to Fraizer Campbell, Ji has been thrown into first-team action sooner-than-expected scoring his first goal for the club in the defeat by Chelsea.

In January 2012, Ji scored a memorable winner against Manchester City in a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

In January the following year, Ji moved on-loan to Bundesliga strugglers Augsburg.
