Boyhood Sunderland supporter Martin O'Neill was officially appointed Black Cats boss on December 3 2011 after 48 hours of manic speculation.

The former Celtic, Villa, Leicester and Wycombe boss had been out of the game since August 2010 when he left Villa Park five days before the new season.

O'Neill enjoyed a trophy-laden five-year spell at Parkhead with Celtic, winning the SPL three times, and reaching the UEFA Cup final.

The ex-Northern Ireland captain's first game in charge of the club was Blackburn Rovers at SOL on December 10 2011.
