Martin O'Neill made his first permanent capture as Sunderland boss when he signed Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer on July 2 2012.

The Spaniard was a trusted lieutenant from O'Neill's Villa days and signed a two-year contract on his arrival at the Stadium of Light.

Equally comfortable at right and centre-back, the Madrid-born defender started his career in Spain before moving to Rangers from whom O'Neill first purchased him for 9m.

Contracted until June 30 2013.
