On March 31 2013, former Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio was appointed as Sunderland head coach, replacing the outgoing Martin O'Neill.

Di Canio, 44, left Swindon Town on February 18 and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at the Stadium of Light.

Appointed to his first job as Robins' boss in 2011, Di Canio immediately returned the Wiltshere outfit to League One and also took Town to the 2012 Johnstone's Paint Trophy final, losing out to 2-0 against Chesterfield.

A highly-talented second-striker during his playing days, Di Canio turned out for the likes of Lazio, Napoli, Juventus and Milan in his native Italy before excellent in the UK with Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham United.

Best-remembered for his four years with the Hammers, the Rome-born forward also won nine caps for Italy's U21 side.

Speaking to the official Sunderland site, owner Ellis Short spoke of the club's new head coach:

"Paolo is hugely enthused by the challenge that lies ahead of him. He is passionate, driven and raring to get started.

"The sole focus of everyone for the next seven games will be to ensure we gain enough points to maintain our top-flight status.

"I think that the chances of that are greatly increased with Paolo joining us.

"Our fans have shown tremendous patience and understanding this season. They have continued to back the team in huge numbers, both home and away, and that is something that continues to inspire all of us in our drive to give them the successful club they deserve.

"That remains our primary aim."

In just shy of two years in charge at Swindon, Di Canio oversaw 95 first-team matches, winning 54, losing 23 and drawing 18 matches.

Contracted until June 30 2015
